THE HISTORY

The first summer arts season was presented at Spier in 1996. Its founder, former MP and businessman, Dick Enthoven wrote:
"South Africa in general and the Western Cape in particular is almost obscenely blessed with a huge reservoir of enviable talent, but there has been so little opportunity for it to develop and mature. Let us hope the Winelands of the Cape will provide fruitful soil not only for our glorious wines, but also for a Summer Performing Arts Festival that, in the not too distant future, will be internationally recognised as important. This will enable the discovery and nurturing of new and exciting talent, provide festival goers with a sense of occasion and enrich the local community both culturally and economically. MAKING THE DREAM A REALITY
  • Ten years later this dream has become a reality. Each year the Spier Arts Summer Season is received with widespread critical acclaim by South African and international press, as well as our audiences. The Festival has established a strong reputation for the quality and diversity of performance achieved over its annual season
  • Over the years the development of relationships with the business sector has proven to be a viable and mutually valuable way of sustaining and nurturing broad spectrum cultural activity
Current and recent projects include:
AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES

  • The Development Ticket Scheme has run for the past two year to provide access for local communities to enjoy and participate in the creation of and appreciate artistic excellence. A certain number of R2 tickets are set aside for each performance and transport is organised from townships
  • By presenting performing arts across the estate beyond the traditional platform of the stage, passive audiences, who might not consider themselves theatre goers enjoy and participate in the performing arts
.
SPIER ARTS SUMMER SEASON - EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMMES -Spier Young Voices

  • The Arts Summer Season sponsors training for school children in classical and traditional music to ensure that voices are developed correctly to enable them to apply for tertiary study of music
  • Currently, 12 pupils from Khayelitsha are participating in the programme
  • Two of these have won regional competitions and places on national competitions
  • One learner has been selected to go to Germany for further training
SPIER ARTS SUMMER SEASON EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMMES - Usher Development Programme

  • Each season, the Spier Arts Summer Season employs graduates from the local Lynedoch secondary school to become ushers. The ushers are given training in people management skills, role playing etc and employed for the duration of the season
  • Entrepreneurial opportunities are provided for crafters, technicians and support services to cultural production

SPIER ARTS SUMMER SEASON PROGRAMME HOSTS RESIDENCY GROUP - THIRD WORLD BUNFIGHT
