La Rosa Spanish Dance Theatre presents Esencias Flamencas, a new production choreographed and directed by Carolyn Holden that will première at the 30th Anniversary Season of the Oude Libertas Amphitheatre in February 2008.
Esencias Flamencas, meaning 'Flamenco Essences', is an innovative dance production that celebrates our South African heritage through the exotic and vibrant medium of Flamenco. Using South African wines as inspiration, Carolyn Holden, the Artistic Director of La Rosa, has created a beautiful display of pure Flamenco, capturing the essential characteristics and moods of various South African wines. Performed by La Rosa’s professional dance company, the piece interprets the subject matter through the use of colour and rhythmic textures, replicating the hues and characteristics of each blend. This is echoed in the costumes designed by Dicky Longhurst. Live music accompanies the dancers for an authentic performance of Flamenco, combining dance, guitar, song and percussion in continuous dialogue with one another. La Rosa was founded by Carolyn Holden in 1990 as a result of her passion for pure flamenco, an element that is strongly represented in this production. Musical direction is by Robert Jeffery who will be accompanied onstage by a superb musical ensemble including Bienyameen on Flamenco guitar, Robert Davids on percussion (cajon) and a guest artist, the Flamenco singer, Rocio Parrilla from Jerez in Spain. Esencias Flamencas runs nightly at the Oude Libertas Amphitheatre in Stellenbosch from the 13th-16th February 2008.The show starts at 20h15 and tickets range from R100 to R120 from Computicket or 083 915 8000. www.computicket.co.za Blanca Saura, Zara Mati & Lisa Ventura in Esencias Flamencas Pic by L.Cairncross
