A non-profit organization run by volunteers, the Barleycorn has been an important stepping stone in the careers of some of South Africa's most famous musicians. The Barleycorn has tended to focus primarily on acoustic music although all genres are generally welcomed. A normal Monday night will see four acts perform for around 30 minutes each, presenting a good combination of established and emerging artists. Performers such as Flat Stanley and Matthew Davison of Palms Up appeared at the Barleycorn early in their career. Current highlights of the year are the annual Barleycorn Festival that takes place in summer at the Maynardville Open Air Theatre, as well as the barleycorn Songwriting Competition that takes place early in October.
