:: EDITORS NOTE ::

This week we continue our focus on DJing. Although many DJs still prefer playing on vinyl, others have gotten used to CDJs. And then there are those who embrace the new digital world of DJing with laptops and software. Traktor Scratch essentially allows DJs to approach playing in all of these ways. This week features a review of Traktor Scratch from the man behind SA DJ Music, Chresos Xekalos. He's been a DJ for long enough to let us know exactly what he thinks of the product.

The Pimp Squad is a DJ/Producer duo who've rocked the dancefloor from Jozi all the way to Cape Town. They make their own tracks and have an arsenal of their own releases under their belt. Most hard-core clubbers would know them from their residency at Truth in Midrand, but you might catch them behind the ones and twos at any party playing deep filthy electronic floor filling house music. They are essentially living a DJs dream, to find out why, read my interview with the boys.

This Saturday sees the global breakdancing championship, Red Bull's BC One coming to Soweto in Joburg. B-boys from all over the world will be battling each other in a one-on-one, elimination round competition and testing their skills against each other to find out who is the best b-boy of them all. Last year's winner, Hong 10 from South Korea, is back to defend his title and will face tough competition from our South African representatives, B-boy Benny, Shorty Blitz and Jed who will have the country behind them all the way.

Lastly we're introducing a new column this week, written by South African music industry expert, Jonathon Shaw. In Jonathon's own words;

"What we are trying out is a consultation time for up-coming artists, label owners, promoters and other industry people. MIO will select someone each month to come through and have an hour of free consultation time with Jonathan Shaw, a music business consultant in Johannesburg. They can come through to his offices and then address their specific problem in their music careers. Hopefully this can lead to making better decisions and having a longer career lifespan. The session will then be presented in a monthly advice column for readers who can give their feedback and comments and stand a chance to be selected."

Read his first consultation with MIO writer, Pathu Ratshilumela who's just completed a rocking house music album and needs some guidance.

:: REVIEWS ::

Roger Goode: Saturday Surgery Vol. 3
At MIO we have a strict policy of focusing on local music which is why we never review international acts. Not that we don't listen to international music, or that we don't enjoy it, it's to do with the fact that we want to promote local artists and we're all about the local music industry. This week we're amending that policy to include South African DJ mixes, even if they only feature international tracks. The reason is that DJs are artists in themselves by virtue of their mixing abilities and track selection. For all those whose mixes we said we wouldn't review because it wasn't fully local, send us your next mix because we'll consider it.

Glenzito: House Avenue V2
Before Lewis Glenzito Tshinavhe moved with the times, many people got to know him from his early bombshells Mid Tempo projects that helped pave the way for other house projects that came out in the late 90s.

Kentphonik: Kentphonik
The most awaited project by the trio, Kentphonik is now shining on the shelves of retail music outlets across the country. And it has been quite a wait, given that Kentphonik have rocked not-stop with their endless tunes featured on many amazing house compilations.
