| |  | | |  |  |  | | :: EDITORS NOTE :: This week sees the end of our focus on the DJ Booth.
Beat matching is all about matching tempos. The idea is that if you (the DJ) match the tempo of the track that you are about to bring into the mix (the track that your are cueing), to the song that is already playing out on the venue's soundsystem, you will be able to play the track that you are cueing over the track that is playing out over the soundsystem and they will rhythmically work together. This will allow you to slowly fade out the track playing out over the soundsystem, while fading in the track you are cueing. In this way there will be no jagged or rough transitions between the tracks you are playing and your set will maintain a smooth, consistent energy. "DJing 101: Beatmatching" continues from the previous DJing 101 article and continues its focus on the basics of being a proper DJ.
In the words of MIO writer Craig Wilson:
"Park your car in Melville often enough, and you start to recognise the flyers which adorn your windscreen and drivers window week after week. If you've glanced at them the next morning (after the last of the night-before's Jäger-bombs have successfully staggered their way out of your system), you've probably noticed a few of the same names cropping up. One such name is that of DJ Sassquatch, known variously as 'Funk-punk Ben' (to the online community), 'Ben Rausch' (to his mother), and 'The tall one with the awesome hair' (to aspiring female hipsters across Johannesburg). I stole Ben's dancing shoes with the promise to return them in exchange for a brief interrogation. Ben got his shoes, while the interrogation turned out to be less than brief – considering its scope, we're certainly not complaining." So read about one of the hottest DJs on the alternative, indie, punk-funk scene.

What more can you expect from the big brother whose got an ear for good music? Roger Goode: Saturday Surgery Vol. 3 At MIO we have a strict policy of focusing on local music which is why we never review international acts. Not that we don't listen to international music, or that we don't enjoy it, it's to do with the fact that we want to promote local artists and we're all about the local music industry. This week we're amending that policy to include South African DJ mixes, even if they only feature international tracks. The reason is that DJs are artists in themselves by virtue of their mixing abilities and track selection. For all those whose mixes we said we wouldn't review because it wasn't fully local, send us your next mix because we'll consider it.
