Maybe the cold water around Cape Town has its advantages to a surfer/songwriter – less time in the water means more time spent writing songs. Most of the tracks on ‘Woestyn’ were written over the last two years, after Myburgh moved to Cape Town. Old friend and vintage guitarist, Albert Frost, took on the job as producer – a first for him – as well as playing all the guitars. The end result is 12 original tracks moving across physical and spiritual landscapes, reflecting the places and spaces where he has found himself up to the present.

A great deal of time has been spent travelling and some of the last places visited include the Wild Coast, Namibia, Botswana and Indonesia. These travels, as well as this album, are funded by a seasonal film industry in Cape Town, in which Myburgh works as a graphic artist, sign writer and scenic.

The album production involved a collaboration of friends – Tim Rankin (Bed on Bricks) – engineer, percussion, drums, Schalk van der Merwe (Bed on Bricks) – bass, Steph Nortjé – drums, and features other great artists such as Ivan Kemp (DNA Strings) on percussion and Adriaan Brand (Springbok Nude Girls) on trumpet. The album was mastered by Tim Lengfeld.

Apart from playing solo acoustic shows, Myburgh has played live with Barry Steenkamp, Steph Nortjé, Leon van der Merwe. Henry Steel is another great guitarist that has featured on stages alongside him.  Upcoming live shows will also vary between acoustic and full band shows.

In 2003 Myburgh released an EP called ‘Burnt Bachelor’. The EP features the touching >Girl=, the blues-groove of >Deurmekaar= (Aconfused@), one English song called >Spiderslides=, which also covers the rollercoaster nature of relationships generally, and a very strange and atmospheric song called >Kuslangs= (Acoastways@), whose trippy, languid feel and English subtitle-echoes resemble that early Pink Floyd sound.

Myburgh Grobbelaar began his music career in 1992 as vocalist for The Fauves, a Parel Vallei High School band in Somerset West alongside Albert Loubser (Frost) on guitar, Dylan Kemlo on bass, Tim Rankin on drums, and David Poole on sax. Albert left to join the Blues Broers and was replaced by Alan Bainbridge. The band then changed its name to the better-known Dorp. Pieter Bezuidenhout then replaced Myburgh on vocals as he headed off to work and travel in Australia, Indonesia and Jersey

In December 2002, Myburgh=s old friend, Dylan Kemlo, was in SA for a holiday and produced and played bass on the >Burnt Bachelor= EP. All the others helped out as well - Albert Frost on guitars, Tim Rankin on drums, David Poole on extra saxes, and Nolan Chiatt did the programming, mixdown and co-production on >Girl=. All songs were written by Myburgh.
