I haven’t been to Danscape for a few years. Danscape usually provides a platform for local dance schools and companies to perform in separate pieces. This year the format was slightly different in that the pieces had some common element as movement, music, theme, or dancers were shared from piece to piece to create I Am Cinnamon. The result was magical.
La Rosa’s contribution was tied in to the rest with the innovative use of oil-drums (drums appearing elsewhere in the form of dustbins). The very exciting to watch Henk Opperman was cleverly used in a beautiful, lilting Indian inspired work (primarily Vadhni Indian Arts Academy) which segued into a piece with dancers who with style of dress and movement reminded us of the Masai with Henk providing the unexpected and very effective link.
Though I found some of the earlier pieces not-so-exciting, as the evening wore on, things just got better and better. The climax of the evening really was that – very moving. The final movement of the evening, by the Jazzart company, was varied, lovely, exciting.
Go along – its well worth the ticket price and some of the proceeds go towards a bursary fund.
Choreography was by John Linden, Ina Wichterlich, Ananda Fuchs, Sbonakaliso Ndaba, and Alfred Hinkel. Dancers were from: Vadhni Indian Arts Academy, CAFDA, CAPA, La Rosa, the graduating class of Jazzart Dance Theatre’s Training Programme and the Jazzart company.
