The Dirty Skirts release their debut full length album On A Stellar Bender in March with 14 tracks of pure Dirty Skirts intent, the album delivers universes on the promise of their debut EP, a rock solid reputation of gigs, media and hype. It’s time to get your intergalactic passport out and come along for the ride. Founded in late 2004 The Dirty Skirts quickly gathered a tidy reputation for mesmerising live shows, cocky, spiky indie pop and a sound that held relevance beyond South Africa’s borders. Their first EP, released in 2005 sent two singles, Feeling The Pressure and Set Me Alight rocketing up the charts on regional and campus radio. Since then, the band have performed extensively, taking their brand of guitar and synth blended pop through the ‘live scene’ club circuit and to the main stages of South Africa’s leading festivals. Finally heeding calls to release a full length album, the band spent most of 2006 generating the funds necessary to record their album independently of a record label. December saw the band closeted away in the SABC studios in Cape town, where they laid the groundwork for On A Stellar Bender. The journey to this point included the obvious late nights and endless parties that one expects of a rock band, but also the deeper insights gleaned from submerging themselves utterly into the pursuit of their dream. The outcome is an album with an astonishingly wide range of emotions in the songs… from a mad and wild party spirit through to a more quiet, conscious and soulful spirit. The musical landscape sparkles with riffs, hooks and musical diversions. This is an album that encourages its listeners to abandon any inhibitions and celebrate living in the moment, but it won’t abandon them when the inevitable post-bender contemplative remorse sets in. With an album release date set for Cape Town on the 1st of March, the band will be embarking on an album launch tour with an international leg including London and New York City en route to perform at the South by South West festival in Austin Texas. The Dirty Skirts will launch in Gauteng on the 30th of March. Watch this space for details on the first single due for release in late February, and all of the above tour information.
