Every Tuesday night the Restless Natives play at Asoka in Kloof Street, Cape Town (over the road from Scooters Pizza). I haven't been to Asoka before, but for a venue to be packed on a Tuesday night, it's quite something, I'm not sure if it's like that every night or if it's just when the Restless Natives are playing. The gig is very intense, with the members of the band basically trading solos throughout the set, they play two set but I only arrived in time for the second. Last night they had Rus Nerwich as a guest sax player which was pretty cool, his tenor although very skillful is generally also melodic which certainly makes it more accessible to people not ready for the intensity that is on offer. I got a short video clip of him playing, check it out below. The video quality is very bad as the lighting in the venue is almost non existent.

Since I last saw the Restless Natives at the Armchair they have added Chris Engel on alto sax. Chris has recently returned to SA after studying in Norway. He is definitely going places, you can check him out with the Nativeson Tuesdays, he also does a weekly gig at FTV with a DJ, and I look forward to hearing him in a different setting. He's one very intense dude when he picks up his horn.

As for the rest of the band, Kesivan Naidoo on drums, Lee Thomson on trumpet, Shane Cooper on upright base and Jason Raelon on keys. I'm not sure who was on keys last night. Check them out, and there's a very chilled vibe in the venue although, as I did mention, it's pretty packed on Tuesday nights. Below is a very short clip of the band together with Rus Nerwich on tenor sax. Chatting with Lee Thomson, he said that a lot of the material for the Restless Natives comes from these Tuesday nights where everyone is free to move and experiment.
