Nothing rough about these diamondsBlack Diamond may seem to be an archtypical hip-hop act, laden with Bling and boasting tattoos, but underneath this exterior lies something far more genuine. Black Diamond was formed in October 2003 when lead rapper, the forgotten Don le Bon and long time friend Shandoe decided they’d had enough of the gangsterism and violence which they’d grown up with in Westbury, West of Johannesburg. The gangsterism, drugs, abuse and negativity were their influence to turn their talents into something extremely positive and uplifting, not only for themselves, but for their community. Says le Bon “I’ve seen kids arrested once and come out of jail full blown Gangsters, we did not want this to happen to us, so we thought starting the band could be a way to break the cycle” . With the addition of rappers Oneshot, Shando and Grammar (their official beatmaker) this core of incredibly talented young artists have produced an album full of confidence, fun and an uplifting attitude yet seen on the South African Music map. Playing shows in their community, setting up dance sessions where young kids are taught the basics of dance by professionals and being a part of a “no hope” community is what drives these hip-hoppers to break the conventions and their own circumstances. Not only do they plan to make something of their lives, but they are in turn benefiting those around them. These Black Diamonds are indeed proving to be something of great value. Black Diamond has teamed up with The Band’s first single off the album “The Seed” entitled “Summertime” is about having fun, living life and enjoying the days in the sun. The track will be released to press in Mid February, so be sure and take note of it as the determination that has driven these boys to make their own brand of hip-hop is sure to take the local scene by storm.
