Meditators Biography

The Meditators are proudly resident at uShaka Marine World for the fifth consecutive year, attaining maximum local and international exposure during this time as well the opportunity to finance the bands own complete sound rig and new instruments after the Seaboard fire which destroyed everything in 2007.

Other accomplished performances include:

• A performance by the band in the internationally acclaimed movie “Stander” 2002 .
• A partnership was forged with the Rita Marley Foundation when the I –threes performed a Womans Day concert with The Meditators at The Bat Centre in 2004, and again at the 2007 Bob Marley Birthday Celebration Photographic exhibition/Zulu Jazz Lounge.

Coming up... 2009

In conjunction with eThekwini Municipality and the More Love Foundation, The Meditators have created a platform to show case the high quality of local reggae music in KZN and will host the 2nd Annual Reggae meets Jazz Afrika Day Concert on 23/24th May with a variety of local and visiting African musicians, bands and entertainers, and are currently in negotiations with The Wailers, from Jamaica in this regard.

A confirmed tour to SA in April/May 2009 by legendary poet/reggae artist Linton Kwesi Johnson will be supported by The Meditators on 2nd May 2009 at the Bluff Showgrounds in Durban.

International comedian Glen Bo

KILLER COMEDY TOUR

The midlands meander is in for a comedy treat as 3 of Natal's best comedians tour to three venues in Botha's Hill, Kloof and the headling show in Howick.

Performing on the bill is Simmi Areff, who opened for Riaad Moosa, John Vlismas and Glen Bo in 2008. Returning from a great JHB tour recently where he played alongside JHB's best Simmi is keen to see the Midlands for the first time. Areff is also on the East Coast Radio Breakfast Team. He is the character who tends to sing and write comedy songs.

The newer face is Robby Collins. Winner of the KZN new act of the year 2008, Collins recently returned from Cape Town representing KZN in a club tour. He has been spotted by no other than Marc Lottering who will be helping him put together his first solo show.

Closing this show is Durban's premier alternative comedian, Glen Bo.The winner of the best solo promoter of 2008 award and nominated in the " most innovative" stand-up award known as the "Da Vinci" Awarded in Jo'burg recently by the (RSA Comedy Industry awards ) and recently returning from Cape Town where represented Durban at the " Rocking the Daisies Festival" in the Comedy Revolution Tent. Bo has been described as " gregariously witty with a tenacious performance streak". He has toured the UK for 4 years and even performed for Royalty in Bahrain and the Seychelles. In RSA he has graced the Durban Playhouse Opera Theare with South Africa's best, and served up his own brand of " no holds barred, alternative surrealism".

MAISHA biography

To interpret “Life” in Swahili you would use the word “Maisha”, and that is what this new band is all about, “Life” in Africa. The band’s music provides an important message of peace and love in a world that needs as much understanding and genuine commitment now more than ever.

Maisha is a new 5 piece band (sometime 7 piece) that plays easy listening soulful and meaningful music from the heart of Africa. The songs reflect the life and times of modern Africa, with messages of hope, peace and love for all. The heart of the band comes from Tresor Riziky a newly acquired talent to South Africa who hails from the Congo and who provides the backbone, lyrics and sweet voice of Maisha. Tresor is fluent in Swahili, French and English and sings songs in all three languages, making this particular brand of music accessible to almost any part of the world and in particular Africa. Tresor is a self taught singer, guitarist and song writer who from a young age has been playing his own music in and around Congo. Recently he moved to South Africa and immediately started looking for people in the music industry that could help him fulfil his dream of giving his special brand of music to the world.

Resulting from a chance telephone to ‘record labels’ Tresor came across Rod Nichols who is the owner of Face Studios and ex-founder guitarist song writer of Dr.Fox who immediately realised the untapped talent of Tresor and wanted to help in whatever way he could to help Tresor realise his dream of recording and performing his music. Hence the birth of “Maisha”. Through Rod’s wide contact base in the local music scene he had in a matter of days gathered an impressive group of musicians to help realise the dream that has become “Maisha”.

First to join the Tresor, Rod duo was Khulekani Zondi who had recently completed his degree in Traditional music at UKZN and who is in his own right an accomplished musician and producer, having worked extensively with local Maskanda, Kwaito, Hip Hop and other more traditional aspect of local music. Khulekani joined the band as a keyboardist, backing vocalist, song writer, producer and percussionist.

Rod then contacted an old muso friend, Ian Jefferys an accomplished drummer who had worked with him in the past. Ian has an impressive record of drumming with bands such as Urban Creep and Edenroc, and has participated in many musical shows in and around Durban. Ian provides the solid rhythm needed for a band that is all about rhythm, and like Rod who also came from a more Rock oriented background provides a fresh angle to the more laid back sounds of the African Soul sort of Jazzy World vibe.

The final member, came in the form of Bongani Maduna who was found via Neil Comfort one of Durban’s most influential people in music in KZN. Bongani’s bass, guitar, backing vocals and percussion abilities is without doubt an integral member of the band.

Special guest appearances to make the Splashy sound even bigger are the inclusion of Trinity Silk on Trumpet and Jon from the Drum Shack on Jembie and percussion.
