The Carpet Mafia was formed in early 2006. Bassist Scott Southgate and keyboardist Chris Born, the two funk/blues afficianados have been composing together for the past ten years. In Cape Town, they crossed paths with two talented jazz/rock orientated musicians, Yiorgos Spanoudis and Joao Henriques, who were interested in putting together an outfit for live performances in Southern Africa.

Funk, Jam Band, Reggae

Completing the line up, they abducted the services of Swiss drummer Juerg Thuli, the master architect of funk. With a line up of South Africa's most talented young musicians, the Carpet Mafia began playing in and around Obz (Obz cafe, Cool Runnings and Armchair), and have quickly garnered a reputation for exciting and innovative approaches to instrumental music. Hailing from a variety of countries and bringing a melting pot of styles to the table, the mafia has now developed a large repertoire of music and will begin recording their debut studio album in June. They have already independently released material compiled from their live performances, bootleg numero uno, which is presently available at their gigs. From small gigs in Obz, the band has now covered the Cape Town scene including memorable performances at Mannenburgs Waterfront, Zulabar, Rafiki's, Hermanus Whale Festival, Obzfest 2006 among others. In December they organized and played a hugely successful series of gigs in Mozambique, including a new years festival with Brazilian electro kings Napalma.
